No doubt food is a big part of traveling. It is a great way to understand the culture and history and also to be connected easily with locals. “Eating” in Korea is not just enjoying food but a way to show care and respect. Knowing some expressions Korean usually use, your trip will be more enjoyable with locals. We often greet each other by asking "Did you eat a meal?" instead of a casual "how are you?" Dating back to the Korean War, most people were starving as food shortages were widespread. Asking if someone had eaten was a meaningful way to show genuine care as well as a practical one to check if someone was not really hungry. If you are served with a variety of food in a generous portion traveling in Korea, it means you are at the right place and being respected. The other way round, to show your good manners to the cook, say "Let me eat well!" when starting eating. It literally means “I will enjoy the food appreciating your effort and heart.” Then be a “good eater", who finishes all the food provided without being picky. Wrap up with saying “I ate well!” meaning “The meal was great.” or “Thank You.” Are you ready to be a good eater traveling in Korea?
